A group of highly educated and experienced personnel formed GEMS International. GEMS, Global Engineering and Management Services was primarily established to upgrade the indigenous textile industry of Pakistan by providing expertise to local manufacturers and exporters of textile made ups. The word "International" formed part of the name because the expertise to be provided was not to be limited to that available locally and not to local industries only. The expertise base is international so is the customer base.

The success of GEMS in the textile industry encouraged GEMS to diversify in other sectors especially in engineering and information technology.
